Dr. Tavenner had lead an extraordinary life, from her time as a Franciscan nun, to teaching in schools and currently public speaking and writing. She has published more than seven books, ranging in topics from her experience as a nun, to her journeys abroad and on various saints and public figures. It is on these topics that she publically speaks. She started her publishing company, Dutch Ink Publishing in 2000, where she writes and self-publishes her work.
After receiving a degree in the liberal arts from Maria Regina College, she continued her education at the Catholic University in Washington D.C. to earn a Bachelor of Arts in education. From there she earned a Master of Arts in religious studies from St. Charles Seminary. She earned a Ph.D. in reading and language arts from the University of South Florida. She has taught in private and public education systems, at elementary, high school and collegiate levels. Prior to teaching, Dr. Tavenner joined a convent at 17 years old. Skilled in Jewish-Christian studies, Dr. Sandberg is noted for her creation of the program and its curriculum at Gratz College. She is proud to have worked for the college for more than three decades, and contribute to its success fusing history and tradition with the future and innovation. The college is known for many firsts, including the first online master’s program in Holocaust and Genocide studies, and the first institution of advanced Jewish learning to accept women on par with men. Prior to becoming the director of Jewish-Christian studies, she was the director of religious education at the Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel.
Dr. Sandberg first attended Bryn Mawr College to receive a Bachelor of Arts in classical Greek and history of religion. She continued to receive her Rabbinical ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. She attended the University of Pennsylvania to earn a Ph.D. in post-biblical Hebrew literature with a focus in Rabbinics. It was during this time that she was inspired by her professor Judah Golden, who both encouraged and provided support while she worked toward a Ph.D. Dr. Sandberg is also a member of the board of directors of the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and is the co-president of the Cheltenham Area Multifaith Council.
