Title: Director of the Centre for Executive and Professional Education

Company: University of Windsor

Location: Windsor, ON

As the director of the Centre for Executive and Professional Education at the University of Windsor, Jennie Atkins was inspired by her parents, who are both successful in their careers. Her father is an educator at the university, and her mother’s tenacity and perseverance enabled her to become a nurse. They have always been supportive of her choices and encouraged her to rise to her greatest level of success. She took on the position of director of the academic writing center, which offered a summer English as a second language (ESL) program. Over her tenure at the university, she turned the ESL program into a full-fledged recruitment pathway program for the university which now operates out of two campus sites.

Ms. Atkins endured a struggle when she became the director of the program. She was under 30 years old and had to prove herself until she made a name for herself and the program that she initiated. It has also been at times difficult to balance her personal life as a mother and her professional life. She travels extensively, but wants to give her son quality attention and be a part of his after-school activities as much as possible. Her greatest strengths are her attention to detail, her advocacy for the students and her great interpersonal communication skills. Her greatest accomplishment was taking a part-time summer program and transforming it into a complete established full-time program with two sites. She was inspired by her parents, who are both successful in their careers. Her father is an educator at the university, and her mother’s tenacity and perseverance enabled her to become a nurse. They have always been supportive of her choices and encouraged her to rise to her greatest level of success. She would like to be remembered for her advocacy for the students. Personally, her greatest accomplishment is her son. Professionally, her greatest accomplishment has been transforming a small language program from a  part-time summer program to a full fledged entrepreneurial department within the university operating out of two campus sites.

Ms. Atkins is presently pursuing a Ph.D. in business administration at the University of Liverpool, and she has earned an MBA in marketing and human resources from the University of Windsor in 2003, a master’s degree in English language and literature from the University of Windsor in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from the University of Windsor in 1999. Her goal is to progress to a senior-level administrative position at the university. She would also like to complete her Ph.D.
