Montclair, NJ, United States, August 18, 2016, Janet Koehnke, Professor and Chairwoman of Montclair State University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, has been recognized by Elite Women Worldwide, for dedication, achievement and leadership in education.

Distinguished for nearly four decades in education, Dr. Koehnke is an expert in psychoacoustics, binaural and spatial hearing and university teaching. She is proficient in grant writing, research, curriculum development, public speaking and program development. As a professor at Montclair State University, Dr. Koehnke oversees the day-to-day function of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders as the chair. At the university, she teaches audiology doctoral courses and mentors student research. She has been a staple to the Montclair State University community for more than 11 years and credits her success to her persistence, hard work, diligence and goal-oriented nature.

Dr. Koehnke was inspired to go into her field by her parents. She has also been inspired by her longtime mentors, Dr. Susan Jerger and Dr. Steve Colburn, as well as her longtime colleague and friend, Dr. Joan Besing, with whom she has worked for almost 30 years. She got her start at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in communication sciences and disorders. She then obtained a master’s degree in audiology at the State University of New York at Geneseo. In 1983, she earned a Ph.D. in communication sciences from the University of Connecticut. She followed this up with a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT from 1983 to 1986. The highlight of her career thus far has been establishing the audiology program at MSU. This program opened at a time when the only audiology doctoral program in New Jersey was closing, and she was able to move the program from that institution to MSU and offer admission to the students from this program.

 

Looking toward the future, Dr. Koehnke will start a three-year term as the vice president for academic affairs in audiology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2017. She has written various articles that have been published in Ear and Hearing, the American Journal of Audiology and the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. She maintains connection to her industry with affiliations to the New Jersey Academy of Audiology, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the American Academy of Audiology, the American Auditory Society and the New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association. In addition, she is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, the Association for Research in Otolaryngology and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.
