Whether through her work as an educator or in the health care field, Julie Bracken has always put herself in a position to help others. Having gotten her start as an elementary school teacher before working in the hospital setting, she later became an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Illinois, bringing her career full-circle. For more than 40 years, she did her best to improve emergency care on all levels.

In her role as a clinical nurse specialist, Ms. Bracken was responsible for overseeing preceptors, clinical issues, the emergency unit and all administrative duties within the emergency room. As a senior nurse, she helped educate those less experienced than she and focused on quality improvement to increase staff efficiency. She was also heavily invested in patient safety, taking very seriously her charge to not only care for them in emergency situations but once their conditions had been stabilized as well. Her work didn’t go unnoticed, either, as she received the Mary Kay Joyce Award for Emergency Nursing Excellence and Professionalism in 2001 and was named both Professional of the Year and VIP of the Year by Worldwide Branding.

Ms. Bracken, a certified emergency nurse and licensed trauma nurse specialist, holds a bachelor’s degree in education, a nursing diploma, and a Master of Science in nursing. She is a member of the Emergency Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International, a professional nursing honor society, and currently serves a consultant to the Cook County Health and Hospitals System.
